Myasthenia Gravis Symptoms
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune condition affecting communication between nerves and muscles. Symptoms vary and may include:
- A droopy eyelid (ptosis) or double vision.
- Slurred or nasal speech, or difficulty chewing or swallowing.
- Weakness when lifting your arms, washing your hair, climbing stairs or rising from a chair.
- Weakness that worsens with activity and improves with rest. Some people notice fewer symptoms in the morning.
Ocular MG affects the muscles controlling the eyes and eyelids. Generalized MG involves muscles beyond the eyes and can affect swallowing or breathing. Symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis.
Your First MG Appointment
We review your symptoms, examination, previous tests and treatment experience. We discuss whether additional blood tests, imaging or specialized testing would help. Not everyone needs the same tests; when specialized testing is needed, we discuss an appropriate outside referral.
Can Blood Tests Be Negative and MG Still Be Present?
Yes. Some people with MG have no detectable antibodies on standard testing; this is called seronegative MG. A negative result does not rule out every case, but it does not prove unexplained symptoms are MG. Your history, examination, actual reports and other possible causes need review.
Treatment Review and Second Opinions
We review what is helping, what still limits daily activities, and any side effects or treatment burden. We discuss next steps, monitoring and outside referrals or coordination when needed. A second opinion may support your existing plan. A consultation does not guarantee a particular treatment or insurance approval.
Let every treating clinician know about MG before a new prescription or planned procedure. Some medicines can worsen weakness; their use depends on your situation. Include nonprescription products and supplements in your medication list.
What to Bring to Your First Visit or Second Opinion
- Previous neurology notes, antibody and nerve or muscle test reports, imaging and relevant hospital records.
- Current medicines and doses, treatments you stopped, and what helped or caused problems.
- Daily difficulties and the questions you most want answered.
A family member or caregiver can join with your permission.
Do not stop medication unless the treating or testing clinician gives you specific instructions. Ask our team how to send records securely; do not put medical details in the website callback form.
Optional Support Between Visits
Managing MG can mean keeping track of appointments, treatments and several clinicians.
Optional membership adds a private phone and text contact route to both physicians during weekday contact hours, plus help coordinating records, appointments and communication with your treating providers. With your permission, we can involve your family and help connect care during a hospital stay.
Membership is not required for usual care, follow-up or explanations. Monthly and annual options; medical services are billed separately. No emergency coverage or guaranteed after-hours assistance.
